Get ready for an adventure like no other as you explore Iceland’s ever-changing landscapes. From the earthy hues of rhyolite to the stark black lava fields, the vibrant yellow and green moss-covered rocks, the regal mountain peaks mirrored in stunning lakes, and the glistening icebergs that adorn the black sand beaches like diamonds, all this beauty is connected by the winding roads that traverse the country.
When traveling in Iceland, here are a few suggestions to ensure the best stay possible.
- Be prepared for Iceland’s unpredictable weather, with snow, rain, fog, powerful winds, and sunshine all possible in a single day. But with a rain jacket, waterproof pants, boots, and gloves- you can confidently adapt to whatever nature throws your way.
- Bring a debit card for gas fill-ups. (some gas stations don’t take credit cards and are unattended, so no one will be available to help or take cash)
- If you drive for any long distance, 3 hours or more, top off your tank every time you see a station. Because you will drive for hours without seeing a town and could quickly run out of gas.
- Thorough planning is the key to a smooth and enjoyable trip. Make a list of the attractions you want to visit and choose a guesthouse or hotel nearby. This strategic approach will help you avoid long drives and the unpredictability of the weather, ensuring you make the most of your time in Iceland.
- In addition to the extra rain gear, always bring extra layers, even if it’s warm and sunny. You might end up in a higher elevation near the ocean or an unexpected wind tunnel.
- Enjoy a hot spring in nature or man-made lagoons, such as Sky Lagoon. I chose this one, and I’m glad I did. It was stunning. I’ve never felt so relaxed before. It was a glorious three hours. (You can arrive when they open and stay all day if you’d like.)
- If you rent a car or camper van, be aware that a cracked windshield caused by gravel getting kicked up from the car in front of you is not covered by normal insurance. You will need to purchase that insurance separately. Also, Google Maps worked better than their extra-charge GPS unit.
- Also, hold your car door when entering or exiting a vehicle. Door damage due to wind is not covered by normal insurance and will need to be purchased extra.
- Don’t buy bottled water, drinking from the tap is healthy and clean.
- If you are hungry and are driving through a town stop and eat or take away. Another place could be a long way away.
- When visiting a beach, watch out for the unpredictable surf; it can sweep you off your feet.
Iceland’s beauty was like no other country I’ve visited. There are so many attractions to see that it is impossible to see them all in one visit. Don’t let this discourage you. It’s a great excuse to have to visit again.

That first picture is priceless. I love it, and I cannot believe the wind is so strong that it could rip car doors right off.Lol That’s so crazy and the car rental places will not cover it!!!
